Four losses Post Falls sees most

Pipe, ice dam, sewer or river: name what got in

Tell the provider where the water came from. Whether the water is clean, gray or black under the IICRC S500 standard decides what can be dried in place and what gets cut out.

Split supply or sprinkler line

In the January 2024 cold snap, Kootenai County Fire & Rescue took 110 weather-related water calls in about a week. A line inside a ceiling can pour for hours before the drywall gives way, so shut the main valve first, then call.

Ice dams and blocked melt

Post Falls averages about 59 inches of snow a year. When the gutters and downspouts freeze shut, meltwater backs up under the shingles and shows up as a brown ring on an upstairs ceiling or a wet top plate.

Harbor Island, Riverside Harbor and Rodkey homes sit right on the Spokane River. Outside water carries silt and often sewage, which puts it in S500's Category 3; carpet and drywall it reaches are usually removed.

Windstorm roof and power losses

The March 11–15, 2026 storms brought 58–99 mph gusts and intense rain, and over 11,000 customers in the region lost power. A federal disaster declaration for Kootenai and five other North Idaho counties followed in July 2026 (Idaho Capital Sun, Jul 3, 2026). A limb through the roof lets rain straight into the attic.

Why Post Falls is different

A river town where most water still starts indoors

The flag says Idaho's River City, and the Spokane River does shape the town. But Post Falls sits up on the Rathdrum Prairie at about 2,202 feet, and the county's own flood history says the city north of the river stayed dry in the 1894 and 1933 floods. The bigger threat for most households is cold.

January 2024

Schools and the library flooded from inside

Fire-sprinkler lines burst at Greensferry and Treaty Rock elementaries; at Greensferry all but five classrooms took water. The Post Falls Library's fire-suppression system failed too, and Goodwill closed for burst pipes. A KCFR deputy chief put the county's damage at millions of dollars.

Housing stock

New homes are not immune

Half of all Post Falls housing units went up in 2005 or later, and roughly 63% since 2000, per ACS 2020-2024 estimates. After the 2024 freeze, some blamed new construction that had never seen that cold, yet older buildings burst as well. Here the weak points are newer supply lines, fixtures and sprinklers.

Every winter

Snow, ice and a -30°F record

January runs roughly 26 to 36°F, about 59 inches of snow falls in a typical year, and the record low is -30°F. That makes frozen supply lines and ice dams under snow load a recurring winter risk, from the subdivisions north of I-90 to the older core around Spokane Street.

1974 · 1996

Rain on snow

In January 1974, a resident near Wolf Lodge recalled nine inches of snow vanishing in a day of rain; downstream, Harbor Island took heavy flood losses. The February 1996 snowmelt-and-rain flood caused about $100 million of damage across northern Idaho.

May 1997 · March 2017

When the lake runs high

Lake Coeur d'Alene, about nine miles upstream of the dam, crested at 2,136.3 feet on May 19, 1997, over three feet above flood stage. Harbor Island stacked roughly 103,000 sandbags into a mile-long wall. On March 21, 2017, Gov. Butch Otter signed a state disaster declaration for snowmelt and rain flooding that included Kootenai County.

Since 1906

The dam is not a flood gate

Avista's three-channel Post Falls Dam holds Lake Coeur d'Alene full through the summer, but during spring runoff no control is exercised over the outflow. Riverfront owners in Harbor Island, Riverside Harbor and the Rodkey Subdivision should plan around that.

Harbor Island, Riverside Harbor and Rodkey docks on the river, a downtown older than most of the town, and prairie subdivisions built since 2000 all share one ZIP. Their water risks are not the same, so tell the provider which part of Post Falls you're calling from.

  1. 1
    Dial (855) 555-0122

If your cell went in the water, a neighbor's phone or a landline does the same job.

  2. 2
    Answer the recording with 83854

No human answers at first. A recorded voice requests a five-digit ZIP. It can feel like a wrong number, but it is the switch that sends Post Falls callers to a provider covering this area. Press 8-3-8-5-4 on the keypad.

  3. 3
    Describe the water

Tell them which floor got wet, whether the main shutoff is closed, and roughly how many hours the water ran. Then have them walk you through the meter readings they'd take, which materials would come out, and whether the invoice follows your insurer's pricing. Booking them is your call.

Homeowners policy

Usually the claim for sudden water from inside: a split supply line, a failed sprinkler head, a water heater that let go.

River or lake water needs its own NFIP contract

Rising river or lake water is flood, and the Idaho DOI (March 19, 2026) says standard homeowners policies exclude it. Only 5,600+ NFIP policies are in force statewide; many cost under $400 a year, with a typical 30-day wait.

Sewer-backup endorsement

Water pushed up through a floor drain or toilet is often covered only if this add-on was bought. Read your declarations page before the adjuster visits.

Idaho check before anyone tears out drywall. Idaho has no restoration-specific license. Contractors register with the Idaho Contractors Board inside DOPL under the Idaho Contractor Registration Act.

  • Registration is required for work of $2,000 or more, and registrants need a general liability policy with a single limit of $300,000 or more (Idaho Code 54-5210).
  • Look the company up at DOPL's public search: edopl.idaho.gov.
  • Pipe, electrical and HVAC repairs need separately licensed tradespeople. Inside city limits, the City of Post Falls Building Division issues plumbing and electrical permits: 208-773-8708 or permits@postfalls.gov, first floor of City Hall, 408 N Spokane St.
River City questions

What Kootenai County callers want to know about soaked homes

Six things Post Falls homeowners ask once the water is stopped. Questions about your own floors and walls go to the provider on the call.

Call (855) 555-0122

Is a live restorer the first voice on (855) 555-0122?

No. A taped menu greets you and waits for 83854 to be punched in. That is the city's single standard delivery ZIP, and entering it is what steers the call toward an independently owned company that accepts Post Falls jobs. Hang up at that point and the call goes nowhere.

My house is nowhere near the Spokane River. Can water damage still happen?

Yes, and for most Post Falls homes the water starts indoors. Kootenai County's flood history notes that the city north of the river was not affected by the 1894 and 1933 river floods, while the January 2024 cold snap burst pipes and fire-sprinkler lines across town, including at Greensferry and Treaty Rock elementary schools and the Post Falls Library.

Doesn't the Post Falls Dam keep the river from flooding?

No. The Avista dam holds Lake Coeur d'Alene up in summer, but the county flood study says no control is exercised over the lake's outflow during spring runoff. That is why Harbor Island residents still built a wall of about 103,000 sandbags in 1997.

Does my policy cover a split line, or water off the Spokane River?

The water's path into the house decides which policy, if any, pays. A supply line that splits without warning normally falls under the house policy. Rising river or lake water is flood, which standard homeowners coverage leaves out, according to the Idaho Department of Insurance; NFIP flood policies usually have a 30-day wait. Water backing up from a sewer or drain is often covered only if you added a sewer-backup endorsement, so read your own policy.

How much does water damage restoration cost?

For a sense of scale only: HomeAdvisor (June 17, 2026) puts the typical U.S. job somewhere from $1,383 to $6,369. Dirtier water costs more per square foot in its figures, roughly $3.50 for Category 1, $5.25 for Category 2 and $7.50 for Category 3. Your own price comes from the provider after a walk-through.

Does the Idaho state database confirm a Kootenai County restorer is registered?

Idaho has no separate restoration license. Contractors doing work of $2,000 or more register with the Idaho Contractors Board through DOPL, and need a general liability policy with a single limit of $300,000 or more. DOPL's public search at edopl.idaho.gov shows whether a business name holds an active registration, at no cost. Pipe and electrical repairs need separately licensed plumbers and electricians, and inside city limits the City of Post Falls issues those permits.
